In the Toledo town of San Martín de Montalbán, about 45 kilometers from Camping el Greco, we find a jewel of the architecture that will transport us to remote times. This is the church of Santa Maria de Melque.

It was probably built in the first half of the 8th century, within a previous monastic ensemble, being one of the best preserved monuments of the Altomedieval Spain. One of the most well-known aspects of the Temple, and for which it draws the most attention, is because of its use by the Templars, who turned it into a defensive tower and incorporated the most characteristic elements of the Templar order into the temple.

It is a more than advisable visit that will not take too long. In addition, we will also be able to visit the famous Castillo de San Martín de Montalbán, which recently have been reopened to the public by guided tours, and is within walking distance.

The entrance to Santa Maria de Melque is free from Tuesdays to Sundays, and is open all year except on 24th, 25th and 31st December, as well as on January 1 and 6. Opening hours are from 11:00 to 20:00 from April to October, and from 9:00 to 18:00 from November to March.
