Convent of Santo Domingo el Antiguo
Best known for the nickname of the old to be, according to popular tradition, the first convent founded by Alfonso VI after the Christian reconquest of the city. So we talk about the end of the S. Xi. This primitive convent was completely refurbished at the end of the 16th century, after the death of Doña María de Silva, who lived here the last years of his existence. His executor probate, the Canon Don Diego de Castilla, knocked down the old church and built a new one that would serve as a burial place for Doña María and himself. The original traces of this work correspond to Nicolás de Vergara the waiter, although a few years later Juan de Herrera introduced some subtle reforms in the original design.
Currently the convent church is open to the public as a museum, and in its altarpieces can be seen the first paintings made in Toledo El Greco, who is supposed to be buried here.
